Overview
Universal mailbox ecosystem aims to reduce homeless population by functioning as a temporary mailbox for those without a permanent resident address. It acts as a gateway to get jobs by acting as a temporary resident address to receive and send mail to employers.
The common question, “Why can’t homeless people just get jobs?” inspired this project and its research.

Problem
According to LAHSA, unemployment and household related reasons accounted for at least 63 percent of cited reasons for homelessness. Lack of address is one of the key issues when it comes to applying for jobs as employers require a reliable address to send paychecks and notices regarding their employees.

Local post offices offer P.O. boxes by renting them out to those who don’t have an address; however, it is extremely difficult for homeless individuals to apply and use these P.O. boxes as there are not enough slots available to cover everyone. While there are over 63,706 people experiencing homelessness (LAHSA 2019), regular homeowners are also eligible to apply for and use the P.O. boxes in their local post office.
Design Inspiration
Homebox's design was inspired by the warm, inviting atmosphere of homes filled with light at night. The incorporation of yellow into the design serves to represent not only the glow of lights but also to make the product feel more approachable and less intimidating. This color choice evokes feelings of warmth and friendliness, creating a sense of comfort and ease for users interacting with the product. By drawing on the familiar and welcoming aspects of home environments, Homebox aims to provide users with a sense of comfort and familiarity, enhancing their overall experience.
Ideation
The industrial design of Homebox was inspired by traditional roof shapes of houses, mimicking their features to avoid rainwater pooling on top and preventing potential sanitary issues. This design choice ensures that water is effectively diverted away from the product, maintaining cleanliness and hygiene. Furthermore, the entire product is assembled from a single sheet of metal, enhancing durability and reducing the cost of manufacturing. This streamlined construction not only improves the structural integrity of Homebox but also simplifies the manufacturing process, making it more efficient and cost-effective. By combining elements of traditional architecture with innovative design solutions, Homebox offers a practical and reliable solution for outdoor storage needs.
